Things to Do in Halifax Nova Scotia

Halifax is located in the Canadian eastern province of Nova Scotia, known for the hospitality of local people – Haligonians, and places like Peggy’s Cove where artists flock to paint some of the most picturesque scenes.

In Halifax, visitors can visit the historic waterfront, shop at the farmer’s market for local produce and handmade goods, or stroll the leafy green public gardens in the center of the city.

Here’s our list of recommended places to visit and how to get around town.

What to Do:

  1. Halifax Highlights:

Visit the farmer’s market, the Halifax Public Gardens, and walk the city to see 18th and 19th century buildings, interspersed with modern architecture.  For panoramic views, head uphill to the Citadel Fortification, one of Canada’s National Historic military sites, and see the 200-year-old Town Clock, an iconic landmark.  For arts & culture, go to the district at the seaport, and stroll the waterfront, or boardwalk near Bishop’s Landing where you can shop and dine.  More shopping at Spring Garden Road, and the historic Granville Mall, where you can take a walk on Barrington Street, to see City Hall and historic St. Mary’s Basilica, and St. Paul’s Anglican Church near Grand Parade Square.

  2. Peggy’s Cove:

This is a must on our list of things to do in Halifax! About a 1-hour drive from Halifax, Peggy’s Cove is a quintessential Nova Scotian village with little cafes, few shops, and a lighthouse.  Fishermen boats arrive with their daily catches, and little fishing shacks create the perfect setting for photos and paintings.

Following the tragic crash of one of Swiss Air flights, the Haligonians teamed with the families who lost loved ones, to create a loving memorial along the coast.

  5. Fairview Lawn Cemetery:

Visit the final resting place where 121 passengers from the Titanic were laid to rest. Definitely an interesting stop on our list of things to do in Halifax that not many tourists are aware of!
