Idaho Tourism creates the “Great Idaho Getaway Project”

Northwestern family invited to see all that Idaho has to offer

Boise, Idaho (January 20, 2010)

The Idaho Division of Tourism recently created a real-life story and invited a Northwest family to experience a true Idaho family vacation.

A family of four from Seattle was chosen among many who applied to be guests of the state of Idaho on a 10-day, 2,200 mile trip throughout the gem state. Traveling in a motor-home, the family was whisked away on many of Idaho’s Scenic Byways through the beautiful outdoors of this great state. The kick was they would be followed by a camera crew the entire time. The division wanted to capture this family’s trip to showcase online for other families to see and experience.

Arriving in Boise!

The family arrived in Boise and was swept away to the Capital City Public Market for some time to peruse the food, wine and art booths. After this, it was a quick trip up to Banks, Idaho for an adventure down the Main Payette River and some serious whitewater.

See wildlife in Idaho!

The next day was filled with a quick flight over to Eastern Idaho for some wildlife adventures at Yellowstone Bear World, breathtaking scenery at Mesa Falls, fly-fishing on the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River and a visit to Harriman State Park.   A short drive away is Craters of the Moon National Monument, a vast area filled with hardened lava flow from millions of years ago. Here, the family was able to experience lava fields as they look on the moon. Then it was on to Sun Valley for some fun in the sun on the golf course. Day two in Sun Valley provided the opportunity for a horseback trail ride and ice skating at the Sun Valley Resort Lodge.  On to Redfish Lake, where there’s plenty to see and do. On this trip, the family chose to take a paddle boat out into the water to cool off a bit. The Sawtooth Mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop to this mountain lake. From here, it was on to McCall for some beach time and a great night along the shores of Payette Lake.

Amazing stay in McCall!

The next day was another day full of adventure as the family ventured up to Hells Canyon for a jet boat tour down the Snake River, then off to Dog Bark Park, a bed-and-breakfast inn that’s shaped like a giant beagle. The kids certainly enjoyed this part of the trip.  From here, it was time for some bike riding along the Hiawatha Trail near Wallace.

The end of the trip was nearing, but the fun sure wasn’t. The next day was a trip to Silverwood Theme Park for some rip-roaring excitement on the roller coasters, as well as water fun at Boulder Beach.  The final day of their Idaho adventure included time at the Coeur d’Alene Resort on beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene.

The film “The Great Idaho Getaway Project” will go live in February, 2010.
