Peering out of our cruise ship port hole, you could see by the number of boats in Admiralty Bay, that Port Elizabeth on Bequia Island was a haven for yachters and sailors from around the world.  Bequia is an island with rolling green hills, few roads, pretty beaches with reefs, and offers a laidback island life for a mecca for artists, writers.  Just nine miles south of St. Vincent, it’s the largest of the 32 Grenadine islands that stretch over a length of 60 miles, like a kite tail, across the southern Windward Island chain.  Bequia beckoned me with its boutique lined-footpaths, but we had only a few minutes to jump onto Michael’s Tours 32 ft. power yacht to take us to the famous island of Mustique.  We wanted to visit Mustique, a private island in the West Indies, and find out what are the “must see” experiences and views in Mustique.  This tiny island of only 2.2 sq. miles is quaint redefined, with only 500 lucky residents who live in the 100 villas that dot the island.

Mustique Company  owns the island and has sold/rented villas to homeowners. Some of these fortunate residents include celebrities like Mick Jagger, Tommy Hilfiger, Bryan Adams, and other famous royal figures like Princess Margaret who have cherised this remote island getaway. Catching a glimpse of one of these celebrities could be a must see in Mustique all by itself!  Within an hour on Michael’s yacht, we pulled into the small Britannia Bay and tied up to a wharf right next to the famous island restaurant bar, Basil’s.

While waiting for our shuttle to Cotton House, we even got to meet the owner of Basil’s, Mr. Basil Charles having breakfast with some of his friends. things to do mustiqueUpon arrival to Cotton House, we were taken in by its peaceful and tropical setting.  The Cotton House is a member of Leading Hotels of the World and is operated by GLA Hotels. It is definitely a place you must see as you visit Mustique!

The main reception area is cozy and welcoming.  This is where the islanders are invited to congregate every Tuesday night for conversation, music and drink.  There are seventeen distinct accommodations, many with private plunge pools, dot the hillside and sea-front of the estate. The structures reflect the old-Caribbean heritage, while giving modern comforts and luxury.  After checking out the poolside area with an old sugar mill adjacent, we decided to lounge at the Beach Cafe, and snorkel the reefs just off of the white coral sand Endeavor Beach on the resort property.  Our time was short, so we left the turquoise waters as the coral fans waved goodbye to us.

After a relaxing few hours at Cotton House, we headed back via Macaroni Beach and a stop to visit Firefly Hotel and Restaurant which has won the approval of Conde Nast, and then off to meet Michael for our return journey.

Before leaving magical Mustique, Basil’s Delroy, Kevin, and Sarge quenched our thirst with some famous Basil’s signature drinks, and the island dog said goodbye before we powered back up the Grenadines to Bequia.
